Dal’s Gardening Tips for Autumn
As the weather cools, it’s time to give your garden the care it needs to thrive through autumn and beyond. From fertilising your lawn to planting seasonal veggies and tackling soil health, Dal’s got the best tips to keep your garden looking its best. Here’s what you need to know this autumn!
• Fertilise your lawn – If you have warm-season grasses like Couch, Kikuyu, or Buffalo that will go dormant over winter, fertilising will help keep them healthy through the cooler months.
• Watch out for fungus – Autumn can bring extra soil dampness and humidity, which are perfect conditions for fungus to grow.
• What to plant in your patch this month: Broad Beans, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Lettuce, Tomatoes and Spinach – these are great choices for autumn!
• Autumn is the ideal time of year to plant trees, shrubs and perennials or transplanting any shrubs or trees as well as to make new plants from cuttings.
• Break up compacted soil – Add gypsum to help improve soil structure in severely compacted areas.
• Boost the soil – Apply organic fertiliser to enhance humus levels and support soil microbiology.
• Roses – Give your roses a light prune and tidy-up this month, removing spindly or dead wood, then feed them with Akers Organic Based Garden Fertiliser to get an “Autumn Flush” of blooms in about 50 days.
• Aerate, mulch, and feed your gardens to prepare for winter veggie planting.
